Thirty days is enough time to organize a Minnesota move without packing everything in a single weekend. The key is to make decisions early, then leave the final week for essentials and access details. A written plan also helps when a closing date, lease deadline or winter storm creates pressure.
Days 30 through 22
Start by confirming the move date, the possession time and any building rules. If you are moving between cities such as Anoka, Andover, Ramsey or Coon Rapids, check the driving route and the parking situation at both addresses. Apartment and condo residents should reserve elevators and loading areas as soon as the date is known.
Walk through every room and decide what is moving, being donated, sold, recycled or discarded. Do not wait until packing day to make these decisions. Measure large furniture and confirm it can pass through doors, stairwells and tight turns. Items that do not fit the new home should be handled before the move.
Contact utilities for both addresses. Arrange electricity, gas, water, internet and any security or access systems. Update insurance, banks, employers, schools and delivery services with the new address. Minnesota weather makes working heat and lighting especially important during a cold-season move.
Days 21 through 15
Pack rooms that are used least often, including storage areas, guest rooms, seasonal clothing and decorations. Use sturdy boxes that are small enough to lift safely. Keep heavier items low and avoid overfilling large boxes with books or dishes.
Label every box with the destination room and a short description. Labels on the top and two sides are easier to see when boxes are stacked. Keep a simple inventory for valuables, electronics and anything that needs special handling. Photograph complex electronics before disconnecting them so cords and settings are easier to restore.
Prepare a box for the first night. Include toiletries, medications, chargers, towels, toilet paper, basic cookware, coffee, pet supplies, children’s items and a few changes of clothes. Keep important documents and valuables with you rather than in the moving truck.
Days 14 through 7
Finish most packing and leave only daily-use items out. Confirm the move time, access instructions, parking, elevator reservation and contact information. If either address has stairs, a long walk from the truck, a narrow entrance or a low clearance, document it before moving day.
Defrost and clean refrigerators and freezers according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Drain outdoor equipment and protect plants if they are moving. Arrange care for children and pets so doors can remain open without creating a safety problem.
Use up or properly dispose of materials that cannot travel safely, including some fuels, chemicals and pressurized containers. Ask the mover about restricted items instead of placing questionable products in a box.
The final week and moving day
Pack the last essentials, clean as rooms empty and keep walkways clear. Confirm that the new home is accessible and that the old home can be left in the required condition. On moving day, keep your phone charged and make sure the person meeting the crew can answer questions about placement.
A good checklist reduces last-minute decisions. It does not need to be complicated. Sort early, label clearly, plan access and keep essential items separate. Questions about your own move? Call (612) 662-5609 or request a free estimate, and a coordinator goes over it with you.
